What is Z-Wave?
Z-Wave is a specification for wireless communication in home automation. In Europe, Z-Wave uses the frequency 868.42 MHz, which should not be confused with NEXA's previous range, which went under the name Nexa Professional, which also uses 868 MHz. This is therefore not the same. Below we have compiled some advantages of Z-Wave over, for example, 433.92 MHz. The range of Z-Wave is no better than 433.92 MHz, but with the help of all devices in a network meshing, the range is still significantly better.

 

Bidirectional communication
Bidirectional communication means that each receiver actually responds each time it receives a command, so you as the user always know if your command has reached the device. If the device does not respond, they try to find other paths to it, more about that in the section below.

Mesh
A Z-Wave network meshes devices, which means that commands (eg ON) jump between multiple devices until it arrives at the correct device, if it arrives. This increases both range and stability.

Security
Z-Wave is not encrypted by default, but in the case where devices support encryption, this is automatically enabled. This means that all communication between your Nexa Bridge and device is encrypted.

Created for home automation
Unlike, for example, 433.92 MHz (which is only a frequency, not a standard), Z- Wave basically made for home automation. The protocol is constantly being expanded with new types of devices and what you can do today will not be the same in a few years. Although today it is mostly used for sensors and switches, it will be possible for manufacturers to build support into, for example, TVs or dishwashers.

Compatibility between different manufacturers
Because Z-Wave is a standard where you have to follow a certain number of rules to be certified, this means that products from different manufacturers work with each other. This in itself means that prices can be depressed and that there is a greater choice for consumers.

Z-wave Plus
Z-wave Plus is an improvement on Z-Wave. With Plus, it is intended that both the ease of use and the function will be improved, for example the range has been significantly improved by up to 150 meters in a clear line of sight.

To be able to take advantage of all the advantages of Z-Wave Plus, all your other devices also use Plus, something that is becoming difficult today because there is still much on the market that does not use this. But it is backwards compatible, so any products you have now will work with other devices that have Z-Wave Plus.
