Since mid-2019 Philips Hue has been updated with additional features that allow it to be used as a Bluetooth-connected lighting system. The lamps are compatible with both Bluetooth and Hue Bridge (ZigBee) and its smart home functionality.
To make the first step into the Hue system easier, you can now connect (max. 10) lights directly to the Hue Bluetooth app that looks and feels just like the original, just with more limited functionality. This way, you have an opportunity to test Philips Hue, before you decide to buy the Hue Bridge and upgrade to the full-featured system that uses your home network instead of Bluetooth to communicate.
Smart home functionality does not disappear completely with this simpler version of Hue. In addition to the Hue remote control with the dimmer accessory, the Hue Bluetooth function is still fully usable with Amazon Alexa and Google Home. So you can control the lights with your voice when you get home, change color and dim whenever you want. To access more features and accessories, the Hue Bridge is required.
